Location

Stable Cottage is a recently renovated holiday home situated within the grounds of the local manor house in the Cotswold village of Painswick. The town is affectionately known as “The Queen of the Cotswolds”, and is one of the finest and oldest in the Cotswolds, nestling in stunning Gloucestershire countryside.

Painswick is located at the heart of the Cotswold Way and surrounded by stunning walks. Nearby, you can explore the renowned Rococo Gardens, Painswick Beacon, and the charming villages of Sheepscombe, Edge, and Slad, which all lie within a mile or so of the town centre. 

The town itself is adorned with beautiful buildings along its narrow streets. Notably, New Street is home to England’s oldest building to have housed a Post Office, as well as the country’s oldest bowling green. The famous parish church of St. Mary’s, is surrounded by 99 yew trees and boasts one of the most remarkable churchyards in the country.

Rococo Garden

The garden regularly plays host to many colourful events, such as the “Enchanted Garden By Night”, or just wander round and enjoy the many seasonal displays that reflect the horticultural seasonal variations of the garden.

Painswick Beacon

Painswick Beacon is the site of an ancient Iron Age fort. Given that it is 283m at its summit, walkers can enjoy some spectacular 360 degree views all over the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside. Walkers can reach the beacon via The Cotswold Way, beside the golf course and then rise to the beacon via some steps.

Sheepscombe

The village of Sheepscombe dates back to 1260, and it lies in a narrow valley tucked away behind the Cotswold Scarp. It was famous for cloth making and had its heyday in the 17th century. Today this beautiful Cotswold village is home to wealthy Cotswold inhabitants who enjoy the luxury of living in this picturesque corner of England.

Edge

The village of Edge is another small village situated in the parish of Painswick. The most notable building is the church of St.John The Baptist built in 1865.

Slad

The village of Slad can be found in the Slad Valley, two miles from Stroud. Apart from being a very picturesque village, it is most famous for being the final resting place of Laurie Lee the author of Cider with Rosie.

Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival

The Cheltenham Food Festival takes place every year in June and features some of the finest chefs from around the world. Enjoy live music, free wine tasting sessions, cheese tasting, and artisan food producers, along with a myriad of demonstrations by some of the country’s leading chefs. On top of all the food and wine events there will be some excellent live music, and artists and sculptors demonstrating their skills all over the town.

Badminton Horse Trials

The Badminton Horse Trials are held in May each year in the park of Badminton House, the seat of the Duke of Beaufort in South Gloucestershire. The horse trials forms the Rolex Slam of Eventing and is the most prestigious event on the equestrian calendar. The event can command crowds of a quarter of a million people and is only second in the world for money made. It also represents a very prestigious event for the competitors who if successful will not only win very high prize money but also a place in the National Olympic squad.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Less than a 30 minute drive from Stable Cottage is Cheltenham Racecourse, which every March hosts the Gold Cup, one of England’s most prestigious horse races. The Gold Cup is the highlight of the Cheltenham Festival, which takes place over four days attracting spectators from all over the world.
